More about our Bunya Mountains and Carnarvon Gorge HIKE
We start at Adventure Tribe home base or we can pick you up from the Sunshine Coast Airport or Noosa CBD. From here we spend a few hours transporting everyone to the start point of the hike at beautiful Bunya Mountains.
Shortly after arrival, we undertake an amazing walk along the Barker Creek Circuit (10km). This park contains the biggest stand of Bunya Pines in the world!
When back at camp, our team will have set up camp and started cooking a hearty dinner to enjoy under the stars. When you’re ready to retire for the night you will spend it in a big comfortable king size swag.
The next morning, we pack up and enjoy our 7 hour bus trip to remote Outback Qld and Carnarvon Gorge. Over the next few days we will enjoy the breathtaking views offered by Carnarvon Gorge including;
Boolimba Bluff (7.6km)
Moss garden
Mickeys Creek
Cathedral cave
Art Gallery
Amphitheatre
Once we’ve finished all of our walks, we’ll jump back on the bus and undertake the journey back to the Sunshine Coast.
Alternatively you can book a flight from Roma Airport to your chosen destination so you can avoid the bus ride :)
Itinerary
Day 1 – Home Base to Bunya Mountains
Meet
6.00am
Adventure Tribe Home Base, 205 McCords Rd, Yandina Creek, Qld. Set among 23 acres of subtropical rainforest, emersed in a massive range of native bird calls, our Home Base sets the tone for the rest of your trip.
6.45am
Whilst at Home Base we will make sure that everyone has what they need, go through some introductions and then we’ll start the drive to our hike start point at the Bunya Mountains.
10.15am
Upon arrival at the Bunya Mountains, we will have a quick morning tea and then get started on the 10km Barker Creek Circuit.
“Meander through rainforest, past picturesque waterfalls—Paradise, Little and Tim Shea falls. Walk through an exceptional stand of bunya pines before emerging above a fern-carpeted forest.
Take the short 750m detour to Big Falls lookout to view the falls and valley below featuring large hoop pines. The true splendour of the falls, the tallest in the Bunya Mountains, is only revealed after heavy rain. Have lunch on the grassy ‘bald’ above Big Falls and view Barker Creek Gorge.
Look for carpet pythons basking in patches of sunlight. Gaze at grey goshawks and wedge-tailed eagles soaring, or topknot pigeons wheeling overhead.”
After we have finished our walk, our guides will have set up camp and prepared the meals for the afternoon and evening.
Dinner
After a fun filled day of hiking through the forest, it’s time for dinner which our team will have diligently prepared for you.
Enjoy the crisp clean air of the Bunya Mountains as you fall asleep in your massive swag on the first night of your trip.
Amenities
This campsite has flushing toilets and HOT showers!
These amenities are shared amenities with other campers.
Day 2 – Bunya Mountains to Carnarvon Gorge
The mornings are pretty cool in these parts so make sure you take plenty of layers to bed! We will get up relatively early as we have a big day of driving ahead of us and we want to have plenty of breaks on that journey!
We’re not going to lie, when we say that this is a big day of driving, it really is. We will spend about 7 hours driving however that will be broken up with PLENTY of breaks for refreshments and toilet stops. Yes we could split this over a couple of days…but we really want to get to Carnarvon Gorge!
Day 3 – Carnarvon Gorge
As professional guides, we start with plans…then adjust them according to the group, so from here on, let’s assume that there’s some flexibility in the order and timings in which we undertake activities 😊
Because we did absolutely no walking yesterday and therefore, you’re well rested and super motivated to get onto the trail, we are keen to get up early and get some sunrise action! This means we will be up and moving as early as 4am!
Boolimba Bluff lookout provides the only elevated view of Carnarvon Gorge that we can enjoy and is a 7.5km hike with some staircases and undulating terrain.
Don’t panic, once we are finished our morning walk we will return to camp for a couple of hours to have a hearty breakfast and then either relax or sleep for a couple of hours before we head back out again!
The remainder of the day will be spent walking on some easy trails including Mickey’s Creek (3.54km) and the Carnarvon Gorge Nature Walk (2km).
Dinner tonight is usually early because of the early morning start that we had in the morning and we have a big day tomorrow!
Day 4 – Carnarvon Gorge
Today we start at a far more pleasant time, when the sun is already up! We will have a relatively early breakfast before we start our 24-25km walk to Big Bend, Wards Canyon and Cathedral Cave. This is a very easy walk in relation to difficulty (if you ignore the 17 water crossings. These crossings are usually fine if you have hiking poles to help you maintain your balance) however it is a very LONG walk! It is out and back so worst-case scenario is that you don’t make it all the way to Big Bend and wait for us to return along the trail and we will walk back together as a group.
Everyone is always ready to get back to camp, take the shoes off and relax with a beverage after today!!
Day 5 – Carnarvon Gorge
Another reasonable hour to rise today!
This is another long walk, but it is made up of a lot of little offshoots and is predominantly flat. Today can be 14-20km depending on how enthusiastic you are. Today we will visit the Art Gallery (a must do), Amphitheatre (a must do) and the Moss Garden. Like day 4, if you’re tired, you can sit out some of the walk and we will pick you up on the way back past, we won’t be away for long and there’s usually plenty of other walkers around to say hello and chat to.
This evening is a celebratory evening as it marks the end of all your walking for the trip!
Tomorrow will be an early morning and will be a big drive so rest your body!
Day 6 – Carnarvon Gorge to Base Camp
We’ll be up early! There’s 9 hours of driving spilt up by food and toilet stops…but again, we’re not going to lie, it’s a big day on the bus! So take your motion sickness tablets, grab your book and embrace the road trip!
We aim to arrive back at Adventure Tribe Home Base by 6pm…however we are placing our faith in the roads being clear and our drive being easy…so give or take on this arrival time. We would 100% suggest you consider extending your stay by booking into one of the local accommodation providers at Peregian (10 minutes away) or Noosa (25 minutes away)
