More about our gheerulla loop hike

As with all of our hikes, start at Adventure Tribe home base or we can pick you up from the Sunshine Coast Airport or Noosa CBD. Enjoy the luxury of the last flushing toilet you will see for two days!

From here we spend approximately an hour transporting everyone to the hike start point.

The valleys are deep and the small creeks are swallowed by the dense foliage of the rain forest.

Experience being surrounded by dense forest for an entire two days. Walking through rain forest to the sound of the Bellbirds is something that we simply can’t get enough of. The energizing and organic sights, sounds and smells accompany you through day and night. Leaving you tired but fulfilled and full of stories and wanderlust.

The often challenging environment makes this particular hike a really good preparatory hike for our bigger hikes because the needs of the hiker are quite diverse over its duration.

Very professional. Felt safe. Had a lot of fun.

We just finished the Cooloola great walk with Hike Australia. Fantastic experience and expertly guided by Kris and Chontelle. Very good equipment and planning... Above all it was a lot of fun and definitely 5 stars for Hike Australia. Thinking about the Carnarvon gorge walk next!

Itinerary

Day 1 – Home Base to Gheerulla Camp Ground

Meet

6.00am

Adventure Tribe Home Base, 205 McCords Rd, Yandina Creek, Qld.  Set among 23 acres of subtropical rainforest, emersed in a massive range of native bird calls, our Home Base sets the tone for the rest of your trip.

6.45am

Whilst at Home Base we will make sure that everyone has what they need, go through some introductions and then we’ll start the drive to our hike start point near Montville in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

7.45am

Upon arrival at the trailhead, we will head off pretty quickly so we can get to our morning tea spot!

Our trail today is an approximately 12km portion of the Sunshine Coast Great Walk!  It is a portion of the Great Walk that feels very wild and remote and offers awesome views.  The trail is undulating and can sometimes feel a little longer than 12km if the weather is warm...or if it’s raining.

This walk takes us through an incredible Subtropical Rainforest full of awesome and edible plants that we will talk about on the way!

As you stomach starts to let you know that it’s time for some sustenance, we get to our morning tea spot.  It’s a magical lookout hidden in the National Park.  A little exposed so make sure you have some sunscreen and a jumper in case it’s cold.  We enjoy this lookout while we have something to eat and a hot drink before we head off again.

We aim to make it to camp by 1.00pm where our team will have already arrived, set up camp and started prepping meals.  You’re free to eat, grab your gear, check out your giant swag, unpack and get comfy for an afternoon of relaxing among the trees!

We will have an antipasto platter and some beverages before dinner in case you enjoy that as much as we do!

Dinner

After a fun filled day of hiking and relaxing in the rainforest, it’s time for dinner which our team will have diligently prepared for you.

Amenities

This campsite has a drop toilet only!  This is a really good introduction to wilderness camping because of this.  We will set up a privacy screen for those who want to take a bush pot bath  (we understand how nice it is to at least go to bed clean).

The toilets are shared with other campers (if there’s any others around).

Day 2 – Gheerulla to Home Base

Wake up to the sounds of the forest!...and breakfast being prepared lol

This is a VERY relaxing start to the day with no rush to get up and active too early…which is a bit different to a lot of hiking tours.

Help yourself to breakfast and slowly prepare for our hike onwards and downwards to our exit at Sam Kelly Road (near Kenilworth).  This trail is approximately 12km with 70% of that being downhill and switchbacks.  We recommend hiking poles so it’s a lot easier on the knees and we will help you with techniques that will help you manage hills throughout your hiking life.

We will enjoy a bite to eat before we jump back on the bus for our return drive to Adventure Tribe Home Base.

2.00pm

Feel the magic of being able to return from an overnight camping trip and not having to worry about packing away the gear or washing everything up…because we have that covered!

You can focus on reflecting on how amazing your trip was, or you can even consider extending your stay in the local area (Peregian Beach is only 10 minutes away and Noosa is 25 minutes away)
