Your Guide to Hiking Sunshine Coast Mountains
Have you explored your backyard? Queensland is a paradise for lovers of the outdoors and the Sunshine Coast is unmatched when it comes to the variety of fun, challenging and adventurous things there are to do in the Great Outdoors. The Sunshine Coast Mountains, in particular, offer great opportunities for hiking to suit every age and energy level.
Why Hike Sunshine Coast Mountains?
Situated close to the coast and surrounded by stunning vistas from the beaches to the hinterland, the Sunshine Coast Mountains are a popular hiking destination all year. There are a plethora of places for nature lovers to discover, with a tropical/subtropical forest environment - from inland rainforests to seaside sclerophyll forests.
The Sunshine Coast is renowned as the home to the Glasshouse Mountains – eleven peaks (two of which can be hiked).
Mountains to Hike on the Sunshine Coast
Bushwalkers and hikers are spoiled for choice with several mountains to explore…
Mt Coolum – the northernmost of the Sunshine Coast Regions Mountains, Mt Coolum is ideal for moderate to intermediate-level hikers. Taking up to 1.5 hours to the summit and back to the starting point (turnoff near Coolum Beach), it is an easier walk until closer to the summit, which involves more strenuous hiking and some stairs. The summit offers unparalleled stunning 360 degree views of the hinterland, coastline and the Glasshouse Mountains to the south.
Mt Ninderry – situated close by Yandina, Mt Ninderry offers a shorter, easier walk than Mt Coolum. It does have some steep sections, but only takes 40 minutes to complete and the summit delivers great views of Mt Coolum, Blackall Range, Yandina and the coast. This walk is dog-friendly too, so you can bring your furry best mate along!
Mt Ngungun – part of the Glasshouse Mountains, and halfway between Noosa and Brisbane, Mt Ngungun offers a 2.8km hiking track which suits a moderate fitness level. Allow yourself two hours – and enjoy beautiful views of Mt Tibrogargan, Mt Coonowrin, and Mt Beerwah from the summit.
Mt Tibrogargan – another of the Glasshouse Mountains, this mountain provides a more challenging hike suited to intermediate and advanced level hikers. There are a variety of trails, the easiest being the Tibrogargan Trachyte Circuit Glasshouse Mountains Trail. This may be linked with other trails. Experienced hikers looking for a real challenge can tackle the Mount Tibrogargan Summit Route – this is only for very experienced, highly fit and confident hikers.
Mt Cooroora – located in Pomona in the Noosa Hinterland, this difficult hike involves climbing stairs and scrambling up (and then back down) rocks. You’ll need between 2 and 3 hours for this hike and take plenty of water and other supplies. The views are worth the effort!
