Top Sunshine Coast Adventures
The stunning Sunshine Coast of southeast Queensland is a mecca for outdoor adventures. From more sedate pursuits like bushwalking and coastal biking to the adrenalin rush of rock climbing or even skydiving, you really are spoilt for choice and the myriad of options from which to choose makes getting outdoors a must!
No matter what your age, energy level, fitness or degree of adventurous spirit, there’s a Sunshine Coast adventure to thrill and excite you…
Sunshine Coast Adventures - Land
Land adventures on the Sunshine Coast include bushwalking, hiking, mountain biking (more than 60 dynamic trails), cycling coastal paths, bush or beach 4WD and horse riding (over 20 tracks). You can also opt for leisure sports like golfing and beach games.
However for real nature lovers, hiking is where it’s really at! The Sunshine Coast has a vast number of day hikes (full- or half-day) as well as multi-day hiking adventures which include bush or beach camping. The region boasts some of Australia’s most famous and popular walks, with more than 120 walks of varying grades and lengths from which to choose.
The very best multi-day hikes on the Sunshine Coast are:
Cooloola Great Walk
Cooloola Wilderness Trail
Noosa Trail Network
Shorter, day walks are scattered throughout the region from the Glasshouse Mountains to Rainbow Beach.
For challenging walks with spectacular views, you can’t go past the Glasshouse Mountains, especially Mt Ngungun – but be wary of underestimating just how challenging these hikes can be. Beginner hikers or first-timers to the region may prefer to try easier walks including Mt Tinbeerwah at Noosa, Mt Coolum, or Mt Cooroora (Pomona/Noosa) first. Please note that with the recent increase in popularity of the Glasshouse Mountains Hikes, it is not uncommon for helicopter rescues to occur weekly, so again, please don’t underestimate these and end up putting yourself and rescuers safety in danger.
Sunshine Coast Adventures - Water
With the ocean to the east as well as plenty of rivers, lakes and streams in the region, the Sunshine Coast is perfect for enjoying an array of watersports – swimming, snorkelling, surfing, stand-up-paddling, SCUBA diving, canoeing (with more than 20 waterways to explore), ocean and river kayaking, jet skiing, kiteboarding and fishing…
Freshwater sports activities on the Sunshine Coast often depend on recent rain and dam levels – overflowing dams can present significant risks which you need to be aware of.
The Kenilworth area has plenty of gorgeous freshwater areas for kayaking, but you do need to be aware of some risks including:
Fencing wire across creeks – used by farmers to control cattle movement
Water-loving snakes – yes, land snakes like to swim!
Feral pigs and dogs – these may not react well if they are startled
Don’t let any of these discourage you – in the event that you encounter any, consider them part of nature and the adventure!
The Noosa Everglades are among only two everglades systems worldwide (the other being in Florida, USA). The tannin-stained water is often a flat, glassy mirror and the area is home to a plethora of wildlife (nearly 55% of all Australian bird species can be found in the Noosa Everglades.
Saltwater sports are fun and exciting and experienced kayakers with the right safety equipment, know-how and plenty of stamina have fantastic saltwater kayaking options on the sea from Rainbow Beach to Noosa to Caloundra. Combine it with fishing; you may even spot whales and dolphins!
Sunshine Coast Adventures - Sky
True adrenaline junkies are always seeking the next big thrill and there are plenty of Sunshine Coast adventures to deliver – from paragliding to hang-gliding, canyoning, climbing, ziplining and more!
Skydiving – jump from a plane and land on the beach under a parachute
Go rock climbing in some of the best locations in Queensland from the Sunshine Coast’s Glasshouse Mountains to Mt Tinbeerwah in the Noosa area to Brooyar on the Fraser Coast.
Abseil and watch the sunset at Mt Tinbeerwah at Noosa.
