Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk
This walk, located 90km north of Brisbane, traverses the Blackall Range through the Kondalilla, Mapleton Falls and Mapleton National Parks. It incorporates 58.8km completed over 4 days, however, there are shorter half-day and full-day walks which can be enjoyed instead. There are bush campsites along the way and the walk takes you through warm subtropical rainforest, open eucalypt forest, gorges, rockpools, streams and waterfalls. Immerse yourself in nature and look out for the more than 100 bird species, 70 reptile species, and 30 frog species native to the area.
Conondale Great Walk
Situated in the Conondale National Park, two hours from Brisbane and an hour northwest of the Sunshine Coast, this 4-day, 56km hike takes you along a circuit route through ancient rainforest, deep gorges, tall open eucalypt forest, and past unspoiled creeks and cascading waterfalls. Alternatively, there are optional shorter walks to enjoy. You will need a 4WD to gain access within the park, as the roads are gravel and there are several creek crossings.
Cooloola Great Walk
Looking for a really challenging hiking adventure? This is the epitome of Sunshine Coast hiking – the most remote, difficult, and spectacular of your hiking options in the area. Up to 102km in length, the Cooloola Great Walk is situated in the Cooloola Recreation Area, between Tewantin and Rainbow Beach (3 hours north of Brisbane). The walk links the Noosa North Shore and Rainbow Beach via the Cooloola Sandmass, with the upper Noosa River to the west. It winds through heath plains, dry coastal woodland, giant sandhills, tall eucalypt forest, and ancient rainforest. There are four walkers’ camps along the trail and the walk is designed to be completed over five days. Spring is extra special on this walk as spring wildflowers bloom abundantly – not to be missed.
